In a rare meeting between US President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping in California, the two leaders have agreed to resume military-to-military communications as a step towards easing rising tensions. President Biden emphasized the importance of direct, open, and clear communication to prevent misunderstandings and accidents. Both leaders also agreed to establish a direct line of communication with each other. China had severed military-to-military communications last year after a visit to Taiwan by then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. While many disagreements remain between the two countries, President Biden described the talks as constructive and productive. However, he also referred to President Xi as a dictator during a press conference, highlighting the differences in their forms of government.
