Trump’s Attempt to Bypass Appeals Court
Late Monday, the Supreme Court requested a response from former President Donald Trump’s lawyers regarding a motion filed by the special counsel. Trump had sought to reverse a federal judge’s ruling in a case related to the January 6 Capitol riot. The Supreme Court granted an extension, setting the deadline for Wednesday, December 20.
Judge Agrees to Stay Proceedings
Meanwhile, lawyers for Trump submitted a motion on Tuesday, urging Judge Tanya Chutkan to pause the proceedings against him until his appeal is resolved. In response, Judge Chutkan agreed to stay the deadlines and proceedings outlined in the Pretrial Order, as amended. She emphasized that if the court reviewing Trump’s immunity appeal also takes jurisdiction over the enforcement of measures, her court will be bound by that decision.
Trial Date Could Be Delayed
The trial, originally scheduled to commence on March 4, may face delays due to the ongoing appeals process. Judge Chutkan stated that she would reconsider the trial date once the appeals process is completed. In August, Trump pleaded not guilty to all four federal charges related to the investigation into 2020 election interference and the Capitol riot.
Supreme Court’s Next Steps
The Supreme Court’s next scheduled conference day for considering such matters is on January 5. The court’s brief order did not indicate what its ultimate decision would be. The outcome of Trump’s appeal remains uncertain, and the case continues to captivate the nation’s attention.
