President Joe Biden authorized missile strikes in Yemen on Thursday in response to attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on ships in the Red Sea. This decision has sparked criticism from both conservatives and progressives, who argue that military action should require the informed consent of the American people.
Conservative Backlash
Conservative commentators and lawmakers were quick to point out Biden’s previous statements regarding the use of military power. Benny Johnson, a conservative commentator, remarked, “‘It’s (D)ifferent when Biden does it.’” GOP Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna sarcastically tweeted, “‘This aged well.’” Washington Free Beacon reporter Joe Simonson criticized the double standard, stating, “‘When you’re a Democrat, they let you do it.’“
In addition, conservatives highlighted the fact that the Biden administration lifted the terrorist designation for the Houthis less than a month after taking office. National security adviser Omri Ceren accused the administration of deception, saying, “‘They knew they were doing bad things for bad reasons so they lied to the public and reporters about their decision.’” Combat veteran and author Sean Parnell simply responded, “‘Welp…’“
Progressive Criticism
Progressives also voiced their concerns over Biden’s decision to authorize the strikes without Congressional approval. Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib tweeted, “‘[Biden] is violating Article I of the Constitution by carrying out airstrikes in Yemen without congressional approval. The American people are tired of endless war.’” Progressive activist Nina Turner similarly criticized the president, stating, “‘Tonight, @JoeBiden dropped bombs on Yemen without Congressional approval.’“
Even within his own party, Biden faced opposition to his actions in Yemen. Some Democrats called for greater transparency and called into question the constitutionality of the strikes without Congressional authorization.
Biden’s Justification
President Biden defended his decision to authorize the missile strikes, stating that they were a direct response to the Houthi attacks on international maritime vessels. He emphasized that these attacks posed a threat to U.S. personnel, allies, and freedom of navigation in a critical commercial route. Biden made it clear that the United States and its partners will not tolerate such aggression and will take necessary measures to protect their people and international commerce.
