Legal Battle Over Subpoenas
Attorneys for Hunter Biden have stated that he is willing to comply with a subpoena issued by the House of Representatives as part of the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Biden. The initial subpoenas were deemed “legally invalid,” but Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, wrote a letter to the committees stating that if a proper subpoena is issued, Biden will comply for a hearing or deposition.
Possible Contempt of Congress Resolution
The House Rules Committee is set to meet on Tuesday to discuss the potential of a contempt of Congress resolution. This resolution would pave the way for a full floor vote on whether to recommend prosecuting Hunter Biden. Sources suggest that a full House vote on the matter could take place as early as Wednesday.
Discussion of a Hybrid Process
In his letter, Lowell mentions a proposed hybrid process for Biden’s testimony, which would involve a public deposition and alternating rounds of questions from Republicans and Democrats. This process has gained support from some Republicans, potentially providing a basis for further discussion.
Reaction from Democrats
House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin praised Hunter Biden’s willingness to cooperate, stating that he is giving Republicans what they have been demanding. Raskin called on Committee Chairs Comer and Jordan to cancel the contempt proceeding and accept Biden’s offer.
Rejecting Special Treatment
Previously, Hunter Biden had requested to testify publicly, but his request was rejected by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan. They emphasized that Biden would not receive special treatment and highlighted the numerous other witnesses who have complied with their subpoenas.
Defiance of Subpoena
Hunter Biden defied the subpoena and chose to deliver a public statement outside the Capitol. Comer accused him of blatantly defying lawful subpoenas, which he claims constitutes contempt of Congress. Comer and Jordan are determined to release the transcript of Biden’s deposition.
Additional Legal Issues
In addition to the impeachment inquiry, Hunter Biden is also facing federal tax and gun charges. He pleaded not guilty to these charges and is currently under investigation.
White House Response
The White House declined to comment on whether it was informed in advance about Hunter Biden’s attendance at the House Oversight Committee’s markup session. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Hunter Biden is a private citizen and makes his own decisions.
Expanded Investigation
Last month, Comer and Jordan expanded their investigation to determine if President Biden was involved in his son’s alleged scheme to defy the subpoena. They believe that such involvement could be an impeachable offense.
