House Republicans Demand Deposition of Hunter Biden
Earlier this week, the House Judiciary Committee passed a resolution recommending the House of Representatives find Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying a lawful subpoena. The resolution, backed by House Republicans, highlights Biden’s refusal to comply with two valid subpoenas related to the ongoing impeachment inquiry.
In a joint statement, House Republicans expressed their determination to hold Hunter Biden accountable. They emphasized their insistence on his deposition as part of the impeachment inquiry. Despite Biden’s recent promise to comply with a subpoena, the statement makes it clear that he had already disregarded previous subpoenas.
Hunter Biden’s Business Dealings and Denials
Hunter Biden has repeatedly denied any financial involvement from his father, President Biden, in his business dealings. This includes his work with Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings and Chinese firms. His lawyer, Abbe Lowell, communicated to the House Judiciary Committee that Hunter Biden would comply with a new subpoena issued under the “duly authorized impeachment inquiry.”
During the ongoing impeachment proceedings, Hunter Biden offered to testify publicly, but his request was rejected by Republican representatives. They insisted that he would be treated like any other witness and referred to the transcript of his deposition, which they vowed to release.
Defiance and Public Statements
Despite the subpoena, Hunter Biden delivered a public statement outside the Capitol, asserting that his father had no financial involvement in his business affairs. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reiterated President Biden’s position, stating that he had no knowledge of his son’s business dealings.
House Republicans Stand Firm
Representatives Comer and Jordan, leading the efforts to depose Hunter Biden, expressed their determination to schedule a deposition. However, they made it clear that they would not tolerate any further defiance or delays from him. They emphasized that the American people expect fairness and transparency, regardless of the individuals involved.
The House Judiciary Committee’s recommendation for contempt of Congress against Hunter Biden marks a significant development in the ongoing impeachment inquiry. The House of Representatives will now consider the resolution as the investigation into Hunter Biden’s actions continues.
