Enthusiasm Gap and Party Support
A recent poll shows that Joe Biden is trailing former President Donald Trump among voters under the age of 35. The poll indicates that Biden has 33% support, while Trump has 37%. However, the majority of lost support for Biden seems to be shifting towards third-party candidates rather than towards Trump. The poll reveals that Trump leads with 39% when an unnamed third-party candidate receives 17%. When specified third-party candidates are included, Trump still leads with 37% while an independent presidential candidate garners 10% support.
Furthermore, the poll highlights a significant enthusiasm gap between Trump and Biden supporters. Out of Trump supporters, 44% describe themselves as having the highest level of enthusiasm, a “10.” In contrast, only 18% of Biden supporters say the same.
Within their respective parties, both Trump and Biden continue to hold commanding leads. Among Republicans, 62% say they will support Trump, followed by former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley at 13%, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 10%, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy at 6%, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 4%. Biden performs even better within his party, garnering 74% support, compared to author at 9% and Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips at 2%.
Concerns and Analysis
Only 39% of voters approve of Biden’s job performance, while 58% disapprove. Vice President Harris’ approval rating stands at 33%, with 57% disapproving. These disappointing numbers have sparked concerns and analysis from within Biden’s own party.
James Carville, a veteran Democrat strategist, and David Axelrod, a former Obama administration official, have raised concerns over the possibility of Trump winning back the White House. They are not alone in their worries. David Faris, a writer and political science professor at Roosevelt University, describes the situation as “even worse than it looks.” He argues that Biden’s historically low polling numbers should cause panic within the party heading into 2024. Faris states, “This might be the worst polling environment for an incumbent president one year out from an election since the advent of the polling era in the 1930s and also the most dire situation facing any Democratic presidential candidate in decades.”
