US-Egypt Collaborate on Humanitarian Front
During a visit to Tel Aviv, US President Joe Biden emphasized Israel’s right to defend itself against the initial Hamas incursion. He portrayed Israel as having been “deeply wronged”, but warned of the perils of being “overwhelmed” by anger.
Backing Israel’s claim, Biden refuted allegations that the explosion at Gaza’s Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, which led to the tragic loss of 471 lives, was a result of an Israeli air assault. This incident has significantly heightened regional tensions.
However, Palestinians hold Israel responsible for the calamity. In a move to assist the affected civilians, Biden announced that $100 million (£82 million) in US funds would be earmarked for Palestinian civilian support.
An insider informed Reuters that the US head of state is contemplating a proposal to Congress for a substantial $10 billion aid package for Israel by the week’s end.
The situation in Gaza remains dire. Following a 10-day blockade by Israel, residents are in critical need of essentials such as food, water, medicine, and fuel. This blockade was a response to the devastating attack by Hamas on October 7, which resulted in the death of 1,400 individuals.
Retaliatory measures by Israel have since claimed the lives of at least 3,000 individuals, as stated by Palestinian health authorities. An alarming number, approximately half of Gaza’s population, have been displaced from their homes due to the ongoing conflict.
Israel’s Stance on Aid to Gaza: In a significant development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has assured that Israel will not obstruct the flow of supplies from Egypt intended for the civilians in southern Gaza.
