President Blames Roe v. Wade Overturn
Legal and medical chaos is unfolding in states such as Texas, Kentucky, and Arizona, following the overturn of Roe v. Wade. President Biden issued a statement, voicing concerns over the jeopardy to women’s health and lives. He criticized Republican elected officials for imposing dangerous abortion bans that force women to seek care out of state and potentially criminalize doctors. The president vowed to continue efforts to codify federal abortion protections through Congress.
Case of Kate Cox Highlights the Crisis
Kate Cox, represented by the Center for Reproductive Rights, was forced to leave Texas to obtain an abortion. Cox’s fetus had a fatal condition, and continuing the pregnancy threatened her future fertility. The rarity of the baby’s condition, occurring in approximately 1 in 2,500 diagnosed pregnancies, was highlighted in legal filings submitted to the court by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Texas’ abortion restrictions, which only allow narrow exceptions when the life of the mother is in danger, failed to include fetal anomalies as an exception.
President Biden Denounces the Situation
President Biden expressed outrage over the situation, stating that no woman should be forced to go to court or flee her home state to receive necessary healthcare. He called the actions of Republican elected officials outrageous and emphasized that such circumstances should never occur in America.
