Celebrity Co-Chairs Reveal Inspirations and References
Vogue has recently announced the highly-anticipated dress code for the 2024 Met Gala, titled “The Garden of Time.”
The theme was revealed through a playful exchange of text bubbles on social media between this year’s co-chairs: Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
The dress code draws inspiration from J.G. Ballard’s novel “The Garden of Time,” focusing on the concept of “fleeting beauty” and melancholic florals as key elements of the theme.
Notable references for the dress code include Dries Van Noten’s Spring 2014 collection with parrot tulip embroideries and Karl Lagerfeld’s floral-embellished pieces from Chanel’s Spring 2015 Couture collection.
Met Gala 2024 Theme Revealed: ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’
Last fall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art disclosed the theme for the Costume Institute’s Spring 2024 Exhibition and Gala as “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”
The theme aims to explore the concepts of rebirth and renewal, using nature as a metaphor for the transience of fashion. This will provide a deeper appreciation of the artistic brilliance of the works on display.
The Met Gala is scheduled for May 6, followed by the exhibition opening to the public from May 10 through Sept. 2.
