Verdugo’s Final Season with Red Sox
Despite a lackluster final season with the Red Sox, outfielder Alex Verdugo has already moved on and started reminiscing about his time with the team.
Airing Grievances with Manager Alex Cora
Verdugo and Red Sox manager Alex Cora recently aired out their grievances with one another. Verdugo was benched for lack of hustle and for showing up late to a game.
Praising New Manager Aaron Boone
While discussing his new team, the New York Yankees, Verdugo took the opportunity to praise his new skipper, Aaron Boone.
“I’m very, very excited to work with Aaron. I’ve seen the way he has his players’ backs,” said Verdugo. “That’s one thing I want to see out of my head coach. I want to see some fire, some fight for the guys. I think, just instead of airing people out, have their backs.”
Jonathan Papelbon’s Displeasure
Former Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon caught wind of Verdugo’s comments and expressed his displeasure.
“Verdugo, I mean Vertigo, is a b—–. Cora has his players and teammates’ backs more than anyone in the game. You aired yourself out by being late, lazy, and unproductive,” Papelbon said. “If I played for Cora, I’m drilling this b—-, just saying.”
Embracing the Fresh Start
Despite the criticism, Verdugo remains focused on his fresh start with the Yankees. He has already shaved his head to fully immerse himself in the new team.
“Fresh start, it feels good,” said Verdugo.
Verdugo’s Career Stats
During his time with the Red Sox, Verdugo had a .264/.324/.421 line in 142 games last season. Throughout his career, he has maintained a .281/.337/.428 batting average with 152 doubles, 57 home runs, and 255 RBIs in 651 games.
