Uncrewed Submersible Vanishes Under Antarctica
A scientific submersible named Ran, used for climate change research, disappeared last month while studying the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica. Ran, measuring 23 feet long, was one of only three of its kind and played a crucial role in studying the melting activity of the glacier, also known as the “Doomsday Glacier.”
Important Research Tool Lost
Ran’s disappearance is a significant loss for climate change research as scientists relied on its autonomous capabilities to explore underwater depths that were previously unreachable. The submersible provided detailed maps of glaciers to aid in the study of glacial melting due to climate change.
Unsuccessful Search Efforts
Despite extensive search efforts using acoustic equipment, helicopters, and drones, the research team was unable to locate Ran after it lost contact during its mission. The University of Gothenburg, which owned Ran, has called off the search, accepting the unfortunate loss of the valuable research tool.
Legacy Continues
The University’s Department of Marine Sciences aims to replace Ran and continue their research expeditions at Thwaites Glacier. Ran’s legacy as a pioneering research tool will be remembered, as it allowed scientists to make groundbreaking discoveries in the study of climate change.
