A Successful Year for Parker
Tony Parker, former NBA player for the Charlotte Hornets, recently shared his thoughts on his retirement and the valuable advice he received from basketball legend Magic Johnson. Speaking from the Atlantis Bahamas, where he was participating in the World Series of Poker Paradise, Parker expressed his gratitude for his time with the Hornets, stating that it turned out to be a “great” experience for him.
During his time in the Bahamas, Parker had the opportunity to spend time with Michael Jordan and gain insights and advice from him regarding the business side of sports. He described the year as “great” and credited his growth to the valuable knowledge he gained from Jordan.
The Wisdom of Magic Johnson
However, the most impactful advice came from Magic Johnson, former Los Angeles Lakers superstar. Parker expressed his admiration for Johnson, considering him one of the most successful basketball players after his career. He revealed that early in his career, he had a strong desire to meet Johnson.
According to Parker, Johnson’s advice was to “create your network while you’re playing.” Johnson emphasized the importance of establishing meaningful relationships and connections while still actively playing, rather than waiting until retirement. Parker found this advice to be invaluable, as Johnson highlighted the fact that once players retire, they can often be forgotten.
Parker elaborated on Johnson’s advice, stating, “When you’re playing, everybody wants to hang out with you. Everybody wants to spend time with you. This is the best way to create your network. And creating those relationships that are going to be meaningful when you start your business.”
Life Beyond Basketball
Since retiring from professional basketball, Parker has ventured into various endeavors. He now owns a vineyard and château in the Rhone Valley in his native France, showcasing his passion for wine. Additionally, he has established a basketball academy to share his knowledge and experience with aspiring athletes. Parker has also taken on a coaching role, providing guidance and support to young players.
With his diverse interests and commitments, Parker shared that he is thoroughly enjoying his retirement. Embracing the opportunities that have come his way, he continues to make the most of life outside of basketball.
