TikTok Trend Under Fire
The recent TikTok trend dubbed “legging legs” has sparked controversy and was ultimately banned by the platform due to concerns of promoting negative body images and behaviors associated with eating disorders. The trend showcased young women with slender physiques flaunting their legs, leading to criticisms of glorifying a specific body type.
Backlash and Platform Response
TikTok users, including prominent creators, called out the trend for echoing past obsessions like the “thigh gap,” with many expressing disapproval and concerns over the impact on body image and insecurities. Following the backlash, TikTok removed the viral hashtag and redirected searches to resources for individuals struggling with eating disorders. The platform has yet to comment on the trend.
Studies Highlighting Risks of Social Media
Research published in reputable journals has indicated that excessive social media use could contribute to body image dissatisfaction and eating disorders, especially among young adults and teenagers. Exposure to certain trends and content on social media platforms has been linked to increased vulnerability to unhealthy behaviors and body dysmorphia.
Efforts to Combat Harmful Content
Social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Meta have implemented measures to address content promoting eating disorders and body dissatisfaction. These efforts include providing resources for individuals seeking help and raising awareness about mental health issues related to body image. Users are encouraged to report harmful content and access support services available on these platforms.
