Ultimatum Given to Navalny’s Family
Russian authorities have issued an ultimatum to the family of Alexey Navalny, stating that if they do not agree to a closed funeral, the opposition leader will be buried at the Arctic prison colony where he died. Navalny, a prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin, passed away on February 16 after spending three years in prison on what many consider to be politically motivated charges.
Standoff Over Funeral Arrangements
Navalny’s spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh, revealed the ultimatum in a social media post, stating that Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, has been given three hours to agree to a secret funeral without a public farewell. However, Navalnaya has refused to negotiate, insisting that the authorities follow the law, which mandates the release of the body within two days of determining the cause of death.
Allegations of Government Interference
Navalny’s team has accused Russian officials of being fearful of the opposition leader even in death, as they continue to block a public funeral that could potentially turn into a display of support for Navalny’s anti-Putin stance. Additionally, they have labeled Putin as a “killer” who is attempting to hinder an independent forensic examination of Navalny’s remains.
Emotional Response from Navalny’s Mother
Navalny’s mother, who was permitted to view her son’s body this week, expressed her distress over the authorities’ handling of the situation, claiming they are pressuring her into agreeing to a secretive burial. She emphasized her desire for a proper funeral and memorial service to be held in accordance with customary practices, rather than behind closed doors.
