Cholera Outbreak Concerns
A Norwegian cruise ship carrying over 2,000 passengers and 1,000 crew members has been refused docking in Mauritius due to concerns of a potential cholera outbreak on board. Fifteen individuals on the Norwegian Dawn have been isolated, and samples were taken for testing.
Health and Safety Prioritized
The Port of Mauritius stated that the health and safety of passengers and the country are paramount. Officials made the decision to block the ship to prevent any health risks, as there have been recent cholera outbreaks in southern African countries.
Cholera Epidemic
Cholera, a severe infection causing dehydration and diarrhea, has claimed thousands of lives in the region since January 2023. The disease, though rare in developed nations, is almost always fatal if untreated.
Passenger Disembarkation
Out of the 2,184 passengers and 1,026 crew members on board, about 2,000 passengers had completed their journey in Port Louis. Meanwhile, 2,279 new passengers were expected to board the ship before the entry denial in Mauritius.
