Haley Accuses DeSantis of Contradiction
In a campaign event near Des Moines, Iowa, on Sunday, Nikki Haley criticized Ron DeSantis for bringing a Republican to Iowa who she claims is the “most anti-Israel Republican there is.” Haley highlighted the contradiction in DeSantis’s stance on Ukraine and Israel. According to Haley, DeSantis has previously referred to Ukraine as a territorial dispute and claimed that the conflict in Israel is not America’s war.
Massie’s Anti-Israel Voting Record
Haley specifically called out the Republican, Massie, for his voting record on Israel. She mentioned that Massie voted with the ‘Squad’ against calling out antisemitism on college campuses and against hitting presidents that allowed antisemitism to happen. Haley also pointed out that Massie was the only Republican to support a ban on giving $6 billion to Iran in exchange for hostages.
Massie’s Stance on Israel
Massie, who identifies as a Libertarian, has opposed much of the legislation in support of Israel. However, he maintains that he is a supporter of Israel. Last month, Massie joined members of the “Squad” in opposing a resolution that equated anti-Zionism with antisemitism. He also voted against a resolution condemning antisemitism on college campuses, citing concerns over free speech.
DeSantis’s Response
In response to the criticism, Ron DeSantis stated that he does not see eye-to-eye with Massie on foreign relations issues and referred to him as “basically an isolationist.” DeSantis emphasized that disagreements on certain issues should not overshadow their overall alignment as Republicans.
DeSantis’s Pro-Israel Stance
DeSantis’s campaign press secretary, Bryan Griffin, defended DeSantis’s support for Israel, pointing out his record of backing Israel in exterminating Hamas and passing strong anti-Iran legislation. Griffin also mentioned DeSantis’s efforts in bringing stranded Americans home from Israel.
