Williams focuses on technique, not worrying about penalties
As penalties continue to be a significant part of the NFL offensive playbook, defensive back Marcus Williams of the Ravens believes that his fellow secondary members should not be concerned about what the referees will call. Williams emphasizes the importance of playing technique, stating, “We just worry about playing our technique the right way because, at the end of the day, they’re gonna make whatever call they’re gonna make. We can’t control that. All we can control is making a play on the ball and staying off the receiver.”
Focus on making plays, not on penalties
Williams emphasizes that the key is to focus on making plays rather than worrying about potential penalties. “We take care of all the other flags and stuff that we can potentially get. But if you worry too much about the flag, then you might not make the play. So, if they call a flag, they call it, it is what it is. In the NFL, you never know what you’re gonna get.”
The surprise of being flagged
Williams admits that he is always surprised when he is flagged. “Shoot, I’m going for the ball every time. So, if they throw a flag, I’ma be pretty mad because I know I’m going for the ball,” he jokes. “So, if they throw a flag on me, I’m like, ‘What are you calling?’ Because we both went for the ball. It’s equal opportunity.”
Defensive backs deserve opportunities for highlight plays
While Williams acknowledges that the tie usually goes to the offense, he believes that defensive backs should also have the opportunity to make highlight plays. “But DBs can make highlight plays too. So, they at least gotta give us the opportunity to do that,” he adds.
With the Ravens currently holding a 9-3 record in the highly competitive AFC North, it seems evident that Williams and his defense are doing something right.
