Meryl Streep, one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actresses, and her husband Don Gummer have been leading separate lives for the past several years. This revelation was confirmed by a representative for Streep in a statement provided to People magazine on Saturday.
The representative stated, “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.” CNN has sought further comments from the actress’s publicist regarding the matter.
The couple, who tied the knot in 1978, celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last month. Over the years, Streep and Gummer have been spotted together at numerous public events. However, they have largely maintained their privacy, keeping their personal lives away from media scrutiny.
In a 2002 interview with Vogue, Streep shared her perspective on family and work, saying, “There’s no road map on how to raise a family: It’s always an enormous negotiation.” She further added, “But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life. I can’t imagine eschewing one for the other.”
Streep’s deep appreciation for Gummer was evident during her best actress Oscar acceptance speech in 2012 for her role in “The Iron Lady.” She expressed her gratitude towards him, stating, “First, I’m going to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you’ve given me.”
The couple shares four adult children: a son named Henry and three daughters, Mamie, Grace, and Louisa.
