Warnings for Eclipse Spectators
The Illinois Department of Public Health has sounded the alarm on a last-minute recall of eclipse glasses that may not meet safety standards for direct sun viewing.
Glasses Sold at Amazon and Southern Illinois Retailers
The alert, issued Monday, applies to eclipse glasses sold both on Amazon and at various Southern Illinois retailers. The glasses, listed as “Biniki Solar Eclipse Glasses AAS Approved 2024 — CE & ISO Certified Safe Shades for Direct Sun Viewing,” were still available on Amazon as the eclipse event unfolded.
Safety Concerns Over ISO Standards
Despite being labeled as a bestseller and AAS approved, the glasses in question do not meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard for safe sun gazing. This standard is crucial for ensuring eye protection during solar events.
Response from Amazon
An Amazon spokesperson clarified that the mentioned brand was recently added to the AAS approved list, leading to its availability on the platform. The company assured customers of proactive measures to address product compliance issues and emphasized prompt actions upon recall notifications.
Customer Safety Measures
Customers were promptly informed and refunded as a precautionary measure before the glasses secured AAS approval. Amazon’s recall protocol involves halting sales of affected products and notifying both buyers and sellers about product recalls to ensure consumer safety.
