Domestically Produced Products Contained Harmful Ingredient
Health supplement products linked to two deaths and over 100 illnesses have been ordered to be removed from store shelves in Japan. The supplements, marketed by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. to reduce cholesterol, were found to contain a harmful ingredient known as “benikoji,” a type of red mold.
Recall of Multiple Products
Following the discovery, not only Kobayashi’s products but also over 40 items from different companies that included benikoji were recalled by the government health ministry. The affected items varied from miso paste to crackers and vinegar dressing, sparking concerns about the extent of potential illnesses among consumers.
Warning and Apologies
The ministry urged people to cease consumption of any products containing benikoji, emphasizing the risks, especially for individuals with underlying health conditions. Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. issued a public apology and advised customers to discontinue the use of their products immediately.
Investigations Underway
The company is currently investigating the source of the contamination, as authorities fear more cases may emerge in the coming days. The incident marks a significant recall of domestically produced supplements in Japan, highlighting the need for stricter quality controls in the health supplement industry.
