Accused of Masterminding Killings
A former Filipino congressman, Arnolfo Teves Jr., has been arrested in East Timor while playing golf and will be deported to the Philippines. Teves is facing murder charges in connection with the killings of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo and eight others. His arrest came after an Interpol red notice was issued to locate and apprehend him.
Arrest and Reactions
Teves was apprehended at the Top Golf Driving Range and Bar in Dili, East Timor’s capital, where he had sought asylum. Janice Degamo, the widow of the slain governor, welcomed the arrest, emphasizing that despite Teves’ attempts to evade justice, he was now facing the consequences of his actions.
Political Conflicts and Justice
The attack on Gov. Roel Degamo highlighted the political conflicts in the Philippines, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. deeming it a “purely political” incident. The arrest of Teves was praised by authorities, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in bringing perpetrators to justice.
Legal Proceedings and Past Involvement
Teves has denied involvement in the killings and claimed he was set up. However, he has been linked to other violent incidents in Negros Oriental and violations of gun laws. The ongoing legal proceedings aim to hold Teves accountable for his alleged role in the crimes.
Despite the challenges posed by political conflicts and insurgencies in the Philippines, efforts are being made to ensure that justice prevails and those responsible for heinous acts are brought to trial.
