Trio from Turkey, Italy, and Sweden Safely Back Home
A team of astronauts hailing from Turkey, Italy, and Sweden have successfully concluded a three-week private mission to the International Space Station, returning to Earth on Friday. The group, which included a retired NASA astronaut now working for Axiom Space, landed in a SpaceX capsule that splashed down in the Atlantic off the coast of Florida.
Turkey Celebrates Historic Space Launch
The mission featured Alper Gezeravci from Turkey, who made history as the first person from his country to fly in space. Joining him were Italian Air Force Col. Walter Villadei, Sweden’s Marcus Wandt, and Michael Lopez-Alegria. The governments of Turkey, Italy, and Sweden collectively financed the mission, each contributing approximately $55 million.
Gratitude and Scientific Endeavors in Space
Before departing the space station, Gezeravci expressed his gratitude for Turkey’s decision to send a citizen to space in honor of the country’s 100th anniversary as a republic. During their time in orbit, the astronauts conducted various science experiments, engaged with schoolchildren and officials from their respective countries, and patiently awaited favorable weather conditions for their return to Earth.
This successful private mission marks Axiom Space’s third trip to the space station, with plans for a fourth mission later this year. The astronauts’ safe return highlights the ongoing collaboration between nations in advancing space exploration and research.
