Einstein and Oppenheimer: More Fiction than Reality
In a surprising twist, Albert Einstein takes on a significant role in Christopher Nolan’s latest film, “Oppenheimer.” While the movie centers around J. Robert Oppenheimer and his leadership in the development of the atomic bomb, the portrayal of Einstein’s involvement deviates from historical truth.
The Unlikely Friendship
In reality, Einstein and Oppenheimer were not friends. According to nuclear-weapons historian Alex Wellerstein, their relationship was more of acquaintanceship than friendship. Oppenheimer viewed Einstein as part of the “old guard.” It wasn’t until the later years of Einstein’s life that the two scientists became close colleagues and friends.
Fictionalized Advice
The film depicts Oppenheimer seeking Einstein’s advice on top-secret calculations regarding the atomic bomb. However, this fictionalized scenario is far from the truth. Einstein, known for his disbelief in quantum physics, would not have been the appropriate source for such calculations. Oppenheimer’s actual consultations were with physicist Arthur Compton.
Einstein’s Political Leanings
Einstein’s socialist leanings and pacifist beliefs played a significant role in his relationship with the US government. Invited to join the Manhattan Project, Einstein declined due to his reservations. Despite his initial support, he later expressed regret, believing that he should have done nothing had he known the Germans would fail in developing an atomic bomb.
Oppenheimer’s Downfall
Following the war, Oppenheimer faced a national security investigation that led to the revocation of his security clearance. Einstein, the perpetual outsider, advised Oppenheimer to relinquish his clearance and distance himself from government work. This pivotal moment in the movie is based on true events. Oppenheimer’s career suffered greatly as a result.
An Intriguing Tale
“Oppenheimer” captures the tension and camaraderie between two influential physicists, albeit with some fictionalized elements. Despite their differences, Einstein and Oppenheimer left a lasting impact on the world of science and history.
