Record Seizure Worth $113 Million
Authorities have intercepted a significant cocaine shipment near San Andrés Isla, marking the largest seizure of the year in the Caribbean Sea off Colombia. The joint operation involving the Colombian Navy, the Colombian Air Force, and the United States Southern Command’s Joint Interagency Task Force led to the capture of nearly four tons of cocaine valued at more than $113 million.
Dramatic Chase Ends in Arrest
The navy released dramatic aerial footage of the pursuit, revealing the crew of the suspicious vessel engaging in evasive maneuvers and discarding packages into the water. After a chase spanning several miles, the vessel, camouflaged under a blue tarp, was intercepted. Five individuals onboard, including three Colombians, one Honduran, and one Venezuelan, were apprehended.
Millions of Doses Intercepted
Subsequent testing confirmed the boat was carrying 3,355 kilograms of cocaine, equating to approximately 3.7 tons of the drug. Officials emphasized that the seizure prevented over eight million doses from reaching the streets, averting potential public health risks. The confiscated drugs, vessel, and suspects were transferred to the Attorney General’s Office.
Continued Efforts Against Drug Trafficking
This operation follows recent intercepts in the region, including a joint effort involving a British warship and an American patrol aircraft near the U.S. Virgin Islands where about three tons of drugs were seized. Colombia, a major cocaine producer, remains a focal point for anti-drug trafficking operations, with ongoing collaborations between Colombian and international authorities to combat illicit activities.
