Woman from Belarus Killed in Bear Attack
A woman from Belarus tragically lost her life in Slovakia after being pursued by a bear while hiking through the Low Tatras mountains. The 31-year-old, accompanied by a 29-year-old man, encountered the bear, prompting them to run in opposite directions.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation Underway
The Slovakian Mountain Rescue Service found the woman’s body in central Slovakia, suspecting she fell to her death while being chased by the bear. Despite spotting the bear near the body, crews managed to scare it off and rescue the man, who emerged unharmed. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the woman’s death.
Escalating Bear Attacks in the Region
Following this incident, a Slovakian brown bear injured a 49-year-old woman and a 72-year-old man in a separate attack in Liptovský Mikuláš. The rise in bear attacks in recent years, including a fatal incident in 2021, has brought attention to the growing bear population in Slovakia’s Low Tatras range, a known habitat for brown bears.
