San Francisco 49ers and McCaffrey Family Among Those Joining the Boycott
In an ironic twist, Taylor Swift, known for her viral gameday outfits, has found herself at odds with some unlikely adversaries. The San Francisco 49ers, who received one of Swift’s outfits from Kristin Juszczyk, the wife of 49ers fullback Kyle, have now declared themselves full-on rivals with the pop star.
Even the McCaffrey family, self-proclaimed “Swifties” and avid fans of the singer, have decided to put their fandom on hold. Lisa McCaffrey, mother of Carolina Panthers’ running back Christian McCaffrey, announced that the entire family would be boycotting Taylor Swift’s songs for the next couple of days.
“I love her, I love the relationship,” Lisa said. “But we are boycotting any T. Swift songs.” She acknowledged that it would not be easy, considering she has Swift’s music on her running playlist. However, she remains resolute: “If she pops up on the radio station… nope. She’s dead to us this week,” she added.
Not the First Swift Boycott
This is not the first time Taylor Swift’s music has been boycotted in a sports context. Earlier this season, ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs’ matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch, a Philadelphia radio station refused to play Swift songs until after the game was over.
“This weekend we gotta focus, so we’ve been forced to punt Taylor Swift from the playlist,” stated show host Buster. Another host, Bex, emphasized the importance of the Chiefs’ players Travis Kelce and D’Andre Swift, stating, “There’s only one Swift-and-Kelce duo we care about here in the ‘City of Brotherly Love.'” The Eagles went on to win that game.
Possible Awkward Encounters
The boycott may lead to some awkward encounters, as Olivia Culpo, girlfriend of Carolina Panthers’ Christian McCaffrey, had bought Lisa McCaffrey a suite for the Super Bowl as a birthday gift. Swift is also expected to be in a suite for the game, fresh off a concert in Tokyo the night prior.
The highly-anticipated Super Bowl will kick off next Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET in Las Vegas. The Kansas City Chiefs will be aiming for their third title in the last five seasons, while the San Francisco 49ers are hoping to bring home the Lombardi Trophy for the first time since the 1994 season.
