Rare Find at the National Archives
Archivists at the National Archives in the United Kingdom made a remarkable discovery when they opened parcels from the Anne-Marie cargo ship, seized by the British Navy during the Second Battle of Copenhagen. Amongst fabric samples, stockings, silver coins, and other items, a fine hand-knit sweater stood out as a unique artifact.
A Piece of History
This red sweater, appearing as if it were bought yesterday, was actually crafted more than two centuries ago. Shipped from the Faroe Islands by carpenter Niels C. Winther, the sweater was accompanied by a letter addressed to the fiancé of Mr. P Ladsen in Copenhagen. The letter, written in Danish, expressed gratitude and well-wishes along with the sweater.
Preserving the Past
Dr. Amanda Bevan of the National Archives described the find as a rare example of a well-preserved parcel from the Prize Papers, typically containing letters destined for delivery by sea. Plans are in place to digitize the contents of the parcels for future study and preservation.
Continued Discoveries
This recent find adds to a string of discoveries from sunken ships. From pistols and coins found at the HMS Erebus wreck to a Dutch warship carrying marble tiles off the coast of England, maritime archaeology continues to unveil treasures from the depths of history.
